Biography

Melissa A. Esposito, M.D., earned her medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and completed her residency training in obstetrics and gynecology from the University of Connecticut Health Center. She completed a 3-year fellowship program in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the University of Pennsylvania. She is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and reproductive endocrinology. Dr. Esposito is a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Throughout her career, Dr. Esposito has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors from the American Medical Women’s Association, the Philadelphia Area Reproductive Endocrine Society, and the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, among others. Aside from her clinical practice, Dr. Esposito is also actively involved in teaching the medical students at Georgetown University School of Medicine in the department of obstetrics and gynecology, Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.

I am always inspired by patients who persevere in their quest to become parents, when that goal can seem so difficult, yet remain optimistic and kind through it all!

Q&A

When I was in medical school and made my final decision to do my residency in obstetrics and gynecology, I had the opportunity to do a rotation with the REI department during my fourth year of medical school. The faculty was so amazing, as were the fellows that I got to shadow and work with, that I became inspired to go into the field. I loved the fact that as infertility specialists we make such a huge and positive impact in our patients’ lives, while getting to practice medicine in a field that is always dynamic, exciting, and continuously evolving.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have been inspired by many people in my life who have positively affected me in many ways! I’ve been inspired by exemplary teachers and mentors during my medical training, but especially during my subspecialty training, who through their dedication to this field and their patients demonstrated what being a great doctor really means! I’m also inspired by those in my life who give back to society through philanthropic and charitable acts of great kindness and sacrifice, by serving and helping the less fortunate, because like them, I believe strongly that we are all called to give back to society in some fashion. I have been inspired by my parents, who have bestowed upon me my steadfast work ethic and drive and sacrificed so much to be sure that I was able to get to college and medical school. I am always inspired by patients who persevere in their quest to become parents, when that goal can seem so difficult, yet remain optimistic and kind through it all!

I feel that we strive to always give the best patient care and practice very ethical medicine, in a field where that can be challenging and at times fraught with ethical dilemmas.

I have many destinations on my travel bucket list that I’m waiting to see until I retire because they will require a long visit. I also sponsor a classroom of children in India from the slums who attend a private school that is funded by corporate and private sponsors. I went to meet my children and their families last year and it was one of the best trips I’ve ever been on! I would love to be able to go to the school every year and volunteer for a month or so once I retire because I was so impressed with the school, the children, and the wonderful educators who have dedicated their lives to these children! These children are so happy and so smart, but more importantly so grateful for the chance to be able to attend school and improve their lives. Being even a small part of something so special makes me a better person!

When I know that a patient is struggling, I think it’s important to acknowledge and validate that they are struggling. I think it’s important to acknowledge that what they’re feeling is not unusual. I let them know that I understand that they are having a difficult time and to reiterate that I am here for them and will do what I can to help them. Just taking an extra few minutes during the consult, sending a card, or giving the patient a call goes a long way!
